Lunchtime poll: Party wear!

My-birthday-and-[livejournal.com profile] ablock's-housewarming party is this Saturday night. (General invite supposedly went out this morning; if you still need the details, just ask, 'cause you're all invited.)

[Poll #185730]

The non-LJ-enabled should feel free to respond in comments.
Consideration of responses may be weighted by the identity of the respondent ;-)

I tend to consider cleavage and a short skit to be overkill. IMO, baring one body part at a time is the most effective.

[identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well, "short" in this case means "slightly above knee". As opposed to "near-ankle-length". Plus the bodice doesn't actually show that much cleavage (as I don't HAVE that much cleavage, and this isn't really the sort of corset that creates it). So it's kind of splitting the difference. :-)

I'm voting for hair up only because I don't think I've ever seen it that way (unless you mean "up" like in set-build-ponytail, which is still nice) and it might be interesting. You have very good "down" hair though.

[identity profile] scholargipsy.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
Despite a long-term Bacchae fan's fondness for maenads, I cast my vote for the "mrrow" outfit -- if only on the general principle of supporting parties where the hostess wears as little as possible. *grin*

You’re tempting me to skip out on Jersey City Open Studios weekend.

;-)

It should be a good party...

I think the gender breakdown on the votes is becoming fascinating.

[identity profile] exponentialdk.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
For the benefit of those of us who don't know the gender of most of Erica's friends (or at least don't know who goes with which LJ account), would you mind posting your observations?

Thanks!

[identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
I hereby offer to post a breakdown in a day or so when the traffic has slowed. :-)

To that end, I kinda wish you could sort "View Poll Answers" by answer, rather than a chronological dump. But as usual, if it's beyond my own capacity to code up, I'm not going to complain about it.

[personal profile] skreeky 2003-09-29 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, sorted by gender preference is probably a more relevant breakdown, but I was just amused at the time that all the people having voted for the long velvet number so far were women, and most of the ones for bodice were men. I think the spandex was pretty evenly split men/women, but that most of those women I believe to be bi. Merely an unresearched hypothesis. It was an interesting train of thought. :-) Let's see how it pans out...

(Upon viewing the responses now, it appears to be far more scattered. Very well. Likely a statistical anomaly due to initially small sample set.)

[identity profile] exponentialdk.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)

Hey, I was the 2nd person to vote for it, and I'm a straight male.
:-P

So I lied a *little*.... :)

[identity profile] zogathon.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
I cast vote for the Maenad costume, because it was The. Coolest. Thing. Ever. :)

But given the probable impracticality, of the remaining choices I'd also have to vote for the Mrrow outfit. Because... well... Mrrow.

And I really wanted to pick *both* up and down hair, since I think you look fabulous with part of it pulled back.

Re: So I lied a *little*.... :)

[identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
This means you and Mr. Z are going to attend. Right? Right? :-)

[identity profile] sanpaku.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
PIX PLS K THX BYE.

:-)

[identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*snork* A perfect synergy of form and content! I actually did LOL at this, though.

Were you suggesting pix for evaluative purposes, or will a record after the fact suffice? If the latter, there'll surely be cameras in attendance. (Whether or not C graces us with his presence ;-)

[identity profile] sanpaku.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Will it really help for us to say, "you know, you really should have worn that other thing"? Hee.

[identity profile] jehanna.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think you should wear what makes you happy.

One thing I thought of was temperature. If it's going to be a lot of people in a smallish space, you probably want to wear less clothing so you're not all overheated and uncomfortable. The other one is the comfort of the actual outfit--if it will be uncomfortable in some way that distracts you from having fun, it's No Good.

If any of the things left on your list of choices meet those requirements, pick the one that makes you feel best about yourself when you're in it. And happy birthday. :)

[identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. :-)

Yeah, I thought about temperature too -- that's basically the only reason I started thinking beyond Blue Velvet! Hair Up would help that, though, at least a little.

[identity profile] evelio.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Darn. Birthday suit isn't an option???

[identity profile] hauntmeister.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
I think we need to see a set of photos, with you in each outfit, before we can make a properly informed decision. :-)

[identity profile] tahnan.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Including, as per [livejournal.com profile] evelio, birthday suit.

I haven't seen the clothes in question, except for pix of the Maenad costume.(Which is awesome.) But I have seen you with your hair up (Princess Ida) and I thought it looked cool.

[identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, Ida! I've worn it up for other shows too, but not the same way.

I almost think I might have worn the bodice and skirt combo for Pinafore Hack Night (for our "British Tart" sneaking-below-decks cameo in the opening scene), but I'm not sure anymore.

[identity profile] jessruth.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ya know, it took me a good two minutes to remember exactly which dress you inherited from me...but once I remembered, I was torn between that and the floor-length velvet thingie (because the latter is just so...yummy). I honestly can't remember which I voted for, but I'd say between those two, go for the one that's the most weather/room temperature-appropriate. I just wish I could be there! =(

[identity profile] exponentialdk.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[reloading friends page periodically]

"Listen to that audience roar! Hair Up and Hair Down are still neck-and-neck [pun intended], but Mrrow is pulling ahead of Elegant! This race is still too close to call!"

[identity profile] bethr.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally I think anything with an "ae" in it is sexy. But what does a Maenad look like?

Yours inquiringly---

[identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! Yes. There's one pic from last Halloween here (with, and courtesy of, [livejournal.com profile] coraline). Wex took a much better one (same outfit, minus the props) at [livejournal.com profile] awfief's toga party a couple months ago, but I haven't scanned it in.

[identity profile] kalessin.livejournal.com 2003-09-29 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)

Mmmmmmm, evening party, evening elegance. Velvet evening gown is my vote... If there's at least one elegantly dressed woman there, then I might be tempted to wear a smoking jacket... :-)

And hair up, 'cause you wear it that way so rarely and I think it'd look lovely...

[identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com 2003-09-30 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh yes, the smoking jacket... :-) That might just settle the matter.

[identity profile] sunspiral.livejournal.com 2003-09-30 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Mrrow and hair down, predictable really. But with an eye towards your physical comfort, I suggest that as the evening wears on and the party grows more crowded and warmer, you should be prepared to shed clothing to prevent overheating. Of course, then the crowd will overheat, and so it goes.

[identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com 2003-09-30 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
It has occurred to me to bring both, and change mid-party... and, as it were, let my hair down. :-)

[identity profile] queendeb.livejournal.com 2003-09-30 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
that's my true vote--
why make one decision?
have it ALL

[identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com 2003-10-01 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm not indecisive, I'm GREEDY!" ;-)

[identity profile] ailsaek.livejournal.com 2003-09-30 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Just as a data point, I am bisexual. Not generally fond of "Mrrow" outfits, though. They look like the person is trying too hard and is being self-consciously sexy-on-purpose. Elegance, OTOH, is almost always sexy.

Kalessin in a smoking jacket. Darn. I may have to tell Adam about this party after all. This I gotta see.

[identity profile] 76trombones.livejournal.com 2003-09-30 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
I have one vote over my shoulder for "they all sound good, but jeans and a tank top is least fascinating"... but we're not sure what our plans are for that night anyway. There are many competing things. :)
