1. Font geeking galore: TypeCon 2005 in NYC, 2 weeks hence! Wonder if I could talk my boss into letting me go??? "It's professionally necessary, I swear..."

2. Klingon Klezmer: "Jewish music from other planets"!
(katyam had sent me a nice link to ALEPH's cantorial ordination program, which I finally looked at, and the director of the program plays in this band. And no -- his name is not "Ka-PLAhhhN!". Oy vey!)

what is ALEPH? Is it similar to HUC and the other rabbinical schools?

I have a close who will probably start cantorial school in a year. Is this a five year program similar to that?

ALEPH is a Jewish Renewal (q.v.) organization. I think the simplest answer to your other questions is "no". :-) I don't really know any more about the structure of their "ordination programs" than what's on that website, though.

Klingon Klez is a wonderful ensemble live, and Jack is an incredible cantor. (I belong to his shul!)

I do in fact know someone who's currently doing the ALEPH cantorial program. Much like their rabbinical program, it's a combination of independent study (via distance learning), supervised in-person study and examination with a mentor, and fieldwork. Last I heard neither program has a set time frame. Generally, people pursue the ALEPH route either as a supplement to a movement-affiliated ordination program, or if they specifically wish to work in a Jewish Renewal or unaffiliated congregation.

Anyhow, although I don't quite see you in a specifically Renewal setting, I'd say do consider the program. It could very well help you get hazzanut gigs.

My chicken sense tells me. Ok, maybe not.

I am intrigued by the existence of a font convention, though. Very geekish.

I figured I could count on you for crash space (handily working a visit into the deal ;-) and in fact I was planning to tell her I'd bankroll the endeavor otherwise, if I could just have the time off. But we'll see -- she said we could talk about it this afternoon, and I printed out the program stuff to look at.

I'm guessing, at this point, since the conference started yesterday, that you're not here :(

Ah, well. Another time, I suppose. For you and [livejournal.com profile] queendeb.
