From the department of Now It Can Be Told: Neil Gaiman and Amanda F***in' Palmer have admitted to the general public that yes, in fact, they are dating.

I would just like to say that I called it months ago, even without benefit of following Neil on Twitter. >:-)

Amanda writes:
it was also kind of an out-of-the-closet gig for us. we’ve been dating for a while, and while not actually keeping it a shut-up-shut-up secret, we’ve been not advertising it because….errrr, why do that? but it’s at the point where it’s just dumb so: yes. i’m dating neil gaiman. and moreover, he’s dating me. (very handy).
and more than that, i truly love him. i do.
the man makes me so, so, so, so happy. finding someone who understands me…really, really understands me…is a miracle. it’s never been this easy. we don’t need to change each other at all. it may sound absurd but he’s the only man i’ve ever met who’s willing to love me unedited, to take me as i am, completely, utterly. it’s been a bitch of a life, this one, running around and touring and working and trying trying to figure out this job and also trying to find real love that works. it’s near impossible. neil gets it. he gets what i do, he gets who i am, he gets how i work, inside and out, and as my friend anthony would say: he loves me despite knowing me. and i get him. i love every inch of his self. and so that’s that.

... On which note, I think I'm going to go slit my wrists now. But that's a story for another day.

Whereas I'm so behind-the-times that, until I read about Neil and Amanda in Scalzi's Whatever yesterday (and did some subsequent wikipedia research), I hadn't even known about Neil divorcing his wife.

Okay, I realize that this is probably really, really, really old news but...I thought Gaiman was married?

Geez, what a clichéd couple. I mean, not to sound all curmudgeonly about the heart's far-carrying call or anything, but yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn middle-aged quasi-Goths in love.

Admittedly I know practically nothing about Palmer. There seems to be near-universal loathing for her amongst my LJ friends. I've read her Wikipedia entry and can't figure out from that why everyone hates her. Can you help me?

My LJ-friends are the converse of yours: they all adore her. Me, I think she's talented, and I've enjoyed seeing her live, but nonetheless just the teensiest bit overrated -- which is, come to think of it, much the same way I feel about Gaiman.

Not surprised and I just can't see it lasting. Palmer is one hell of a narcissist and Gaiman has a family whom he's devoted to. Palmer won't be willing to play second to his kids.

[personal profile] mabfan and I wondered the same thing. Turns out he got divorced a while ago but, in deference to his ex-wife, who is *not* a celebrity, kept it as quiet as possible.

He actually addressed this in his blog a month ago, probs so he wouldn't look like an ass when folks figured out he was seeing AFP. He seperated 5 years ago and divorced the following year

Oh god! This and the existence of the Who Killed Amanda Palmer book are going to mean something that is the stuff of nightmares: Neil/Amanda fanfiction!!!

Well, *she's* not middle-aged, she's 3+ years younger than me. ;-)
Which I think is exactly why my gut reaction is "WOOOOOO GO GO GO!!!"

I found out about it on LJ. And my complete thought process was as follows:

And here were my thoughts, in order:

1. Isn't Gaiman married? I didn't know they were poly.
2. Oh, he's gotten divorced. That's sad.
3. I guess this reduces MY chances of dating Amanda Palmer. I shoulda tried to become her friend more back when my downstairs neighbor was hanging with her.
4. Does this mean that, in order to date Amanda Palmer, I'd have to date both her AND Neil Gaiman?
5. You know, I'm cool with that.

Really? I've not REALLY met her much, but most of my friends who know her like her well enough.

I know a few people who articulate it as being annoyed at her musical success in spite of, in their views, not having that much in the way of talent. (personally I like what Ive heard of her music)

Part of her appeal is summed up in the "Girl Anachronism" video, where she nails the role of the crazy chick who would be great in bed but a nightmare to date. I suspect most people who've actually met or dated anyone like that and had a bad experience as a result will react negatively to her.

Penultimately, she pissed a LOT of people off with her song "Oasis," where she used an upbeat tune to describe how the music of Oasis helped her through the emotional turmoil of having an abortion as a teenager and being raped in her 20's. People saw this as making light of the experiences and allegedly ALL the UK outlets refused to air the video.

Finally, I know a few people who dislike her mainly because their significant other has an obvious crush. The fact that she's admitted to being bisexual has meant there are probably a fair number of guys who are jealous of their wife's / girlfriend's crush as well as women jealous of their husband's / boyfriend's crush.

Enh, all I ever said is that the woman can't sing and writes shitty songs anyway, but 90% of my Flist is nuts about her... or so I thought until they started talking about her personality, of which I know nothing.

I still say she can't hit a note to save her life.

I like her in concert. She has sufficient talent for her field. I am not a raving fan, but I can relate to some of her work.

Professionally, she is awesome with her fans, which is why she tends to have such a loyal fanbase.

If you know folks in Boston, many dislike her due to her personal history with mutual friends. "Girl Anachronisms" do rather leave a wake of destruction.

Sorry, just the way my brain works. I'm sick and twisted when it comes to what the plot bunnies will use to produce new ideas. Luckily for me, my brain came to a screeching train wreck at that thought and is too busy working on another story to decide to produce such an abomination.

Besides, while I really like Neil, I don't like Amanda at all.
