My cousin Jimmy, rock'n'roll drummer by night, is currently on tour playing for Eddie Money. (He's holding down his day job in CA from the road via laptop and cellphone.) And they were playing last night within striking distance of me -- at the Casino Ballroom in Hampton Beach, NH. C didn't care to go and [livejournal.com profile] mattrolls had rehearsal, but [livejournal.com profile] ablock was up for it, so we took a Wednesday-night roadtrip!

Overall, the evening was fun. We made really good time, barely over an hour (1:10, maybe 1:15 tops), despite having to depart from Cambridge at prime rush hour. Upon arrival, we drove into the beach area and discovered that somehow we had been magically transported to the Jersey Shore! Same exact layout, same little family hotels and rental cottages lining every block, same strip of arcades and tattoo parlors and pizza joints all along the seashore as far as you can see.

So we parked the car, called Jimmy's cell, found out that *they* weren't even going on until 9:30pm (boo) but the opening act at 8pm was Jefferson Starship (yay!). Walked around, got some pizza and later some soft-serve (to complete the Jersey Shore experience), then went in ("Hi, I'm on the guest list...") around 8:30. Found some seats near the back wall which were pretty comfortable. Found Jimmy eventually, who came over to say hi for a few minutes before he had to head in to go onstage. Chatted about music and all the '80s bands they're playing double-headers with along the way. Not just Starship, but Heart, Rick Springfield, .38 Special...

The Starship set was actually more fun than Eddie Money, who would have been better if (a) we'd known more than 4 of his songs and (b) he'd have given up waggling his hips around like he thinks he's some kind of 28-year-old sex god. (He's 54 for crying out loud, and though some 54-year-old men have the charisma to pull that off, I just don't think he's one of 'em.) So the show itself was kind of the least of it. But it was fun to get to see Jimmy play, and fun to get up to the seashore. Even if it meant struggling to stay awake while driving home until 12:30am. Then again, I went on to have a rather more productive day than usual at work today... so clearly I should go out to the beach on late weeknight jaunts more often.

And now I gotta run -- date tonight with [livejournal.com profile] mattrolls to see the much-vaunted Pirates of the Caribbean. Arrrr!
