(do not taunt Happy Food Meme!) started by [livejournal.com profile] coraline:

list your top 6 "happy foods". the foods that when you eat them, make you want to do a little dance in your seat. can be restaurant, junk food, home-made, whatever. (and if you want to include recipes for the home-made ones, i won't object!)

In no particular order:
  • Fresh mozzarella, fresh tomato, and fresh basil.
  • Hash browns (or home fries) with runny fried (or poached) eggs.
  • Salmon nigiri (sushi).
  • Fresh avocado.
  • Fresh pineapple.
  • An abundance of cooked mushrooms in any context (pizza, pasta sauce, Chinese food, stroganoff, whatever). [livejournal.com profile] mrmorse has seen this completely turn my mood around.

Of course, [livejournal.com profile] coraline, having decreed a total of 6 items, went ahead and snuck in a 7th anyway, and so shall I:
  • Chive cream cheese on a rye bagel.

EDIT: Oh, what the hell. This one is my list, I'm going to add others as they come up.
  • Asparagus. Steamed, with a little salt only (no butter or mayo). But it also has to be cooked enough to taste like asparagus; undercooked and crunchy doesn't do it.
  • Vanilla buttercreams, robed in dark chocolate (though milk is good too). Alternatively, Cadbury creme eggs.
  • Mary Chung's soy-sauce eggplant.

Note also that I am not thinking "comfort foods" in an emotional sense. I (and I think [livejournal.com profile] coraline) was thinking strictly of the food experience: the foods that cause me involuntarily to grin and sigh happily as I chew the first bite... and the last bite. I have a great many favorites, but some (like the above) do stand out in this regard.

I was going to try and do my taxes tonight, but I am still in the office, and totally unmotivated. The kind of mood where if [livejournal.com profile] ablock were in town he would say "Clearly we need to blow off all our responsibilities and go to the movies."

Maybe I'll go to Diesel for a bit.

Mmmm, I've been eating a lot of fresh avocados lately. They also go well with eggs, IMO.

Perhaps if you ate an abundance of cooked mushrooms in some context, you would become motivated to do your taxes?

    • Spaghetti with meatballs, the way my mom makes 'em. The favourite food of the Sidlofsky men.

    • Thick barley soup with flunken, the way mom makes it.

    • Barley-mushroom casserole, again, my mom's recipe.

    • The kishke with gravy at Yitz's Delicatessen in Toronto.

    • Pizza with extra cheese, sliced tomatoes, onions, and mushrooms. And creamy garlic dipping sauce. Courtesy of the Canadian Pizza Pizza chain.

    • Soft, warm chocolate chip cookies, fresh out of the oven

Good thing I just had dinner and can write about this without dashing off in mid-sentence.

I'm home for spring break for some of that week. Tuesday is also Kendra's birthday, so we made tentative plans to spend time in Boston. Things aren't really looking up, at this point. But there are Girl Scout cookies that I ordered from Talia, so I really should be local at some point next week...

    • Fresh avocado.

    • Fresh pineapple.

You should try Baja Fresh's Chipotle Glazed Charbroiled Chicken Salad, which has both of those (the pinapple is grilled, but only a little), and many other yummy ingredients besides. I think there's a few in your area...<checks website>...yep, there's one in Faneuil Hall and one in Stoneham.

Fresh mozzarella, fresh tomato, and basil.

*drool* Three things that were absolutely made to be eaten together!

I agree on hash browns, avocado, pineapple, and mushrooms, too. :)

    Oooh, good meme.

    1) Bagel (any kind) with melty cream cheese (tomato and lox bonus)
    2) My grandfather's recipe for chocolate chip mandel bread
    3) Tim Tams
    4) Fresh pineapple--agreed
    5) Thai mango curry with lots of vegetables (the meat is secondary)
    6) Hot apple cider, with or without rum
