Besides the consumption of all things Harry Potter (p.s. found another good [HP-spoiler] essay) -- lots of creative action going on in my life this week. (And I didn't even make it to ArtBeat.)

Did two ketubah fill-in's on Sunday afternoon... which I was glad to get done, but then I wished I could have waited (at least for the wedding that wasn't Monday morning! ;-) because the first of our three-session calligraphy class at the shul was Monday night. (Tiger Boy: "Calligraphy class? Are you teaching it?") It was SO FUN! Next time I need to bring in some of my previous work to show the rabbi. But it was a treat to just play with the letterforms and spend some time feeling out how they should be constructed. There are three other students in the class and every one of them was, like, breaking their brains trying to do it "right". I was just having a ball. I need to take some practice time between now and next session, though. -- With the handouts and techniques he's giving us, I kinda feel like I could teach a mini-mini-session, for all y'all who couldn't make this one. But we'll talk.

Then I went over to [livejournal.com profile] melissaagray's so we could do some recording of the Friday night davening! People have been bugging me to do this for ages, as a learning tool; but she finally bought a little voice recorder so we had no more excuses. We'll be putting them up on the [livejournal.com profile] tremontstshul web site soon. More details as they accumulate.

After that I was supposed to go maybe brainstorm wedding invitation designs for a pair who shall remain temporarily nameless... but was too wiped, so we'll do it next Monday. And last night, another layout consultation for a friend who's co-writing a workbook... of Haitian Creole. Should be fun. I'll be creating some sample pages for him in the next 2 weeks. Yay book design!

Tonight, Juliet's/NEGASS Patience sing-through has unfortunately been cancelled (and next week's Mikado moved to her house). However, I couldn't go anyway, because tonight I'm leading a shul expedition to the Shakespeare on the Common Hamlet. Anyone who wants to tag along -- we're meeting at 6:30 for an 8pm performance, so bring your own blanket and picnic/snacks.

Ooh, I couldn't do the calligraphy class this time, but I'd love a mini-mini-session.

Sorry I can't make Hamlet tonight, but I'm having dinner with an old friend and then hopefully getting to sleep at a reasonable hour so I won't be dead going into the second weekend of the show. Yeah, right...

I'd be interested in a mini-session of the class too.

I've done some calligraphy before, and I'm thinking about making a Humanist ketubbah for our wedding (I'd better think fast -- it's in September!). I don't need to write any Hebrew for this project, but I'd be interested in a practice group / class if you want to do that.

BTW, I haven't asked you formally, but I was wondering what you charge for ketubot and if you'd do mine and Tony's? Wedding is projected for March 2007, so you'd have time. :)

Aw! I'd love to work on that with you. I usually charge $45/hr for design work, but it's negotiable for friends. :-) Start thinking about how you want it to look, and we can talk about it when it gets closer (we definitely don't need more than 6 months lead time, and 3-4 months is plenty). You saw my portfolio, right?

I've been meaning to ask you that too... :) (James and I are getting married three years from now though, so there's plenty of time).

Geez, you guys. :-) I'd love to.

(I just hope all this weddingfulness rubs off on me, like, sometime in the interim! ;-)

Unrelated, but before I forget: I heard you were in Jill Pelavin's wedding. Does she have an LJ name?

She does! and I was (though I'm curious where/how that came up!).

She and Simson know one another from MIT, and he ran into her recently.

And huge thanks again for doing such a lovely job at the very last moment. We both really really appreciated it.

What exactly is the new icon?

It's not so new, just not so often used. It's Matisse's Poissons Rouges, which I generally use for posts about art. Or, y'know, fish.

Ah, OK - much easier to tell in the larger version. Thanks!
