So if [livejournal.com profile] gilana and I were going to do a duet for First Church's Broadway Night fundraising evening... what could we do?

There just aren't that many Broadway female/female duets that I know of (and [livejournal.com profile] gilana claims to know even fewer). But I was thinking "Marry the Man Today" from Guys & Dolls. Or maybe "Mister Snow" from Carousel. There must be something good from Chicago, but I don't know it well enough or have it to hand.

Ideas, anyone? Either alto/alto or alto/sopranoish is okay.

P.S. Tonight's auditions were fun! And not too terribly nerve-wracking!

Seconded emphatically. And it should carry very well outside the context of the show as well, and be snazzy and upbeat.

Also West Side Story, "A boy like that" ... doesn't carry so well outside the context of the show, and the overlaid rhythms are a real bitch even when you have an orchestra behind you.

In the completeness category (I wouldn't necessary recommend these over WYDKAW):
"My Child" from Blood Brothers
"Every Day a Little Death" from A Little Night Music (this one is pretty and will stand alone, but it's also slowish and depressing)

and for a women's trio, "Perpetual Anticipation" from A Little Night Music is a wonderful sort of fugue that should stand alone fairly well, but you wanted duets...

I love "I Know Him So Well" from CHESS. Also, there is "I Will Never Leave You" from SIDE SHOW, and there might be one or two more from that show, since it's about two women who are Siamese twins.

I'm not helpful in answering your question, but I have to say:

I'm half amused, half horrified by the lyrics for "Marry the Man Today" behind your link. It looks like it was transcribed by a voice-recognition program and then edited by a middle-school student.

"At Warner Makers and Sax and Klines" should be
"At Wanamaker's and Saks and Klein's," and

"from Borney Autonome" should be
"from Borneo to Nome"!

:D

Girls of the Night isn't included in the currently available version of J&H, but "In His Eyes" is (as someone noted above).

Downside is that they're both S/S, or *maybe* doable as S/A.

You could probably do "Hey, Big Spender" from "Sweet Charity" or "Bali High" from South Pacific and turn either into a duet.

(And, I would love to hear you do "Bali High" sometime.)

I Move On is a duet between Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly and Class is between Velma and Mama Morton. I'm not that familiar with the vocal ranges, the first song is more soprano/alto and the other is alto/alto. I Move On is definitely not challenging.

There is also "I Still Believe" from Miss Saigon (Ellen and Kim).

So if [info]gilana and I were going to do a duet for First Church's Broadway Night fundraising evening... what could we do?

See, now here's the benefit of having slightly bad eyesight and skim-reading. I thought you two were going to do a DUEL. And I thought to myself, what a fun exercise. It could be stage combat style - you'd both look smashing in Musketeer-style garb, with rapiers, sashes, hats, boots, the works... I'd pay to see that.

Or perhaps it would be funnier to do a verbal duel. A la The Importance of Being Earnest. There are plenty of verbally wicked female-female theatrical duels you could do...

Then I read on to the bit about Broadway. Singing. Meh. I like my fantasy plan better.

Heh - [livejournal.com profile] chanaleh in her iconic pirate outfit... hey, for Broadway duels, you could do the Pirate King and Sergeant from Pirates of Penzance! It's not female/female, but I find it highly unlikely there are any. (Though you might find some in good fiction.)

The Gwendolyn/Cecily verbal duel in Earnest is, in fact, excellent.

You might even be able to combine it with What You Don't Know About Women, sung about Earnest... which could be very fun. And give the women some interaction in the song, which they don't have in the original context.

Ah, but now I have TWO iconic pirate outfits! -- Well, perhaps only this one technically qualifies as an outfit (in the sense that it consists of clothes I own and can combine as such again).

I think Gilly and I are just going to have to take this list of suggestions and go look at sheet music.

While I could repeat what everyone else has said about doing "I know him so well" from Chess, it would be really redundant at this point.

But I will add "I still believe" from Miss Saigon
