belated weekend update
Tuesday, August 13th, 2002 02:16 pmThough I guess it's only Tuesday, so posting about the weekend is not *that* overdue.
Friday night Jonathan's improv comedy troupe, Kitsch In Sync, performed at the Out of the Blue Gallery in Cambridgeport, which they do about once a month. They had a 7pm show and a 9pm show, so I went to the later one after shul, and Joelll came with me. We got there just in time, 'cause they were packed to the rafters! Unbelievable! They added an extra row of audience into the front, which is where we got squezed in; and I wasn't at all convinced they'd be able to do improv in a space only 3 feet deep, but they did, and a fine job too. I haven't seen any improv in years. And it was neat to put faces to all the names that Jonathan mentions.
After the show they were all going out for food, which I would have enjoyed coming along on, but I had to go home and start learning my Torah reading. (Some would consider that waiting to the last minute. For me, starting on Friday night is practically getting a head start. But it was a longer portion than I usually take on, so I was still behind schedule.)
So Saturday after shul, Jonathan came to pick me up and we went off to the beach. Specifically, Long Beach in Nahant (right off the Lynnway), which I'd never actually gone to, though I've driven by it literally a hundred times. (That's my route to the synagogue in Swampscott that I sing with, where my ex-boyfriend used to be the cantor and my friend Renee now is. But anyway.) It was practically deserted (we didn't get there until 4:00), and the tide was pretty low so there was almost a quarter mile of extra beach to walk straight down before you got to the water. We played in the surf and then we played in the sand, which was waterlogged to the point of being quicksand, so it was extra fun to play with. Jonathan was building drip castles andaccidentally created a pond where the water welled up into the little hole he'd dug out. And suddenly (the way the sun was slanting down onto the puddle) we noticed that the pond was teeming with... Sea Monkeys! In the wild! Jonathan thought that's really what they were, too: microscopic brine shrimp. Wherever half an inch of water built up, these little specks would start popping out of the sand and zooming around in the water, then just as suddenly burrow back down into the sand. We started building more ponds with more mountains and castles around them, and then little canals connecting the ponds so the sea monkey communities could open up diplomatic relations. It was the coolest.
After that we sat on the beach for a while (Jonathan had brought his Backpacker guitar), until the sun had mostly set; and then we drove up to have dinner at the Leaning Tower of Pizza on Route 1 in Saugus, which was a ball.
And Sunday I really really had to get work done (this major freelance project that's been hanging over my head for weeks, finalizing two catalogs for these folks). But first I made French toast for breakfast and so Jonathan and I ended up sitting around having really wonderful conversation for, like, three hours. Then after he went home, I talked to Jessica (my best friend in NYC) for an hour, so I didn't buckle down until 3pm... so I didn't get done until 11:30 pm. But I got done. Hooray. (Now I'm just waiting on the next round of catalog corrections from them before I can actually *really* finalize and put the damn thing to bed already. We've been working on these for almost a full year.)
