Not exactly a weekend update, more of a bookend update. Here goes:
Last Friday I worked a full day with a cold that, after several days as an intermittent chest cough, had moved up into my head and ears. Bleah. It was much better by the end of Saturday, however (fortunately).
Saturday night we went to see the Concord Players' The Lion In Winter, with special bonus
theatreatfirst dinner outing beforehand because
ironpoet was playing Philip. I enjoyed the production, and the casting was pretty good overall, but I missed
navrins. Kibitzing with
desireearmfeldt was fun though.
Sunday I drove with David S down to Westchester County to be in a concert production of Iolanthe -- at Temple Israel Center in White Plains, organized by Rabbi Robbie Harris of Shake, Rabbis & Roll (oh yeah, and also of High Holidays at
tremontstshul in recent years). 6 hours of driving, 5 hours of rehearsal, 2 hours of performance (plus lunch and dinner). They do a different show every year, and David's been trying for years to get me to come down for it, but since conflicts always seem to arise, this is the first time I've actually been able. I didn't fully appreciate until performance time that the cast comprised 2 rabbis, about 10 cantors or cantorial students, David, and me (!). And I was only scheduled to sing in the fairy chorus (dayenu), but ended up understudying Phyllis for the Act 1 finale (!!) ... when I wasn't filling in the first-tenor line from offstage during the men's sections. :-) I have now had enough pushing the top and bottom of my range to content me for the next few weeks at least. However, I earned particular praise from the musical director/accompanist, Linda Hall, a terrific woman who in her day job is a rehearsal pianist for the Metropolitan Opera (!!!), so that was heartwarming.
Monday: work and shul board meeting. Tuesday: skiing daytrip to Waterville Valley with Tiger Boy,
towk and
lyriendel; they had a total of about 3 green trails, but I was content to play around/practice on them all day, and had a good time.
Tonight: bridesmaid dress shopping with
gilana and
muchabstracted! Tomorrow night, Valentine's Day. :-D
