Someone asked me this a few months back, and in the interest of the upcoming holiday giftgiving season, I thought it might make an interesting meme.
In terms of commercially-available scented things,
what kinds of scents do you like?
Anything "green" or herbal (lavender, sage, coriander, cucumber, grass, green tea)
or woodsy (cedar, pine, sandalwood)
or with water in the name ("rain", "ocean")
is better than
anything spicy or resinous (ginger, cinnamon, clove, myrrh)
is better than
anything floral (gardenia, lily, honeysuckle; rose is OK but ranks pretty much at the end of my list)
is better than
anything food-scented (coffee, chocolate, vanilla)
is better than
anything fruit-scented (apple, melon, raspberry).

I also love rose scents for the most part, as long as they are not too sweet and cloying.

Date: Friday, December 1st, 2006 03:15 am (UTC)This reminds me of an afternoon in Jerusalem's Arab shuk, back in '86. My friend Jason and I stopped by a stand with a guy selling fragrances; he caught our attention by playing some sort of recorder. The guy showed us a vial of musk and said, "Put a drop of this on your neck when you go to your girlfriend. It give you two hours of love." Amused as we were, we didn't put it to the test.

Date: Friday, December 1st, 2006 03:22 am (UTC)Unfortunately, the older I get, the more strongly I am affected by commercial scents, and not in a good way. Most people's perfumes give me headaches, as do makeup and perfume stores and places like Yankee Candle. On top of that, when I am having a bad lung day (asthma flareup), strong scents make it worse. :-/

Date: Friday, December 1st, 2006 08:20 am (UTC)I'm impressed that your tastes run so neatly by category. I like some florals (pikake, rose), some spices (cinnamon, ginger), some foods (notably almond, vanilla and pumpkin). I'd agree that fruit-scented is unlikely to appeal to me, but so are the herbal ones.

Date: Friday, December 1st, 2006 01:13 pm (UTC)However, on the rare occasion that I find something I'm *not* allergic to, I prefer spices (cinnamon, chai, nutmeg) or non-floral herbal ones (green tea, rosemary, sage, mint).
From my late high school/early college days I still own two essential oil bottles from The Body Shop: peach and vanilla. When I wore the vanilla I was told that I smelled like chocolate chip cookies (and my male friends loved it); when I wore the peach I was told I smelled like flowers. The best reaction, though, was when I wore both at the same time and I was told I smelled like peach cobbler. All of my guy friends liked that one the best. :P
Now I wear nothing, as Vekson doesn't like any perfumes and tends to be allergic to more of them than I am.

Date: Friday, December 1st, 2006 05:50 pm (UTC)I am especially amused by the Sefirot/Kelipot and Tarot lines. I am supremely curious how those were developed. Not curious enough to buy the entire set of samples, though, unfortunately.

Date: Friday, December 1st, 2006 07:57 pm (UTC)I too am curious as to how they could develop so many scents appropriate to particular spiritual, mythological or gothic symbols. I hope this isn't like the standard Simpsons gag in which several different flavours of a product (e.g. Duff beer) are all in fact the same thing with different labels. (Kidding!)
