Someone asked me this a few months back, and in the interest of the upcoming holiday giftgiving season, I thought it might make an interesting meme.

In terms of commercially-available scented things,
what kinds of scents do you like?

Anything "green" or herbal (lavender, sage, coriander, cucumber, grass, green tea)
or woodsy (cedar, pine, sandalwood)
or with water in the name ("rain", "ocean")

is better than

anything spicy or resinous (ginger, cinnamon, clove, myrrh)

 is better than

anything floral (gardenia, lily, honeysuckle; rose is OK but ranks pretty much at the end of my list)

  is better than

   anything food-scented (coffee, chocolate, vanilla)

   is better than

    anything fruit-scented (apple, melon, raspberry).

For me it's easy: none, please! Anything non-scented is finifintely better than anything scented with anything at all. :)

Interesting! I also like "male" scents. I actually don't like floral, fruit-scented OR food scented.

Spicy and resinous...mmm. I use spicy scents close to my skin (soap, shaving foam) and woodsy/green/herbal on my hair.

One of my all time favorite scents is the Vitabath "green" scent (Vitabath shower gel). It's a blend of pine/spruce and cedar .. very clean and green smelling.

Oddly enough, I recently found this same scent in one of the holiday themed candles from Yankee Candle.

I also love rose scents for the most part, as long as they are not too sweet and cloying.

My favorite personal scent is Cool Water - the men's version. Sexy as all get-out.

I agree with those in the "no scent please" camp.

I used to wear cologne on dates, a long time ago, but I found that it didn't make any difference as to the outcome. ;-)

This reminds me of an afternoon in Jerusalem's Arab shuk, back in '86. My friend Jason and I stopped by a stand with a guy selling fragrances; he caught our attention by playing some sort of recorder. The guy showed us a vial of musk and said, "Put a drop of this on your neck when you go to your girlfriend. It give you two hours of love." Amused as we were, we didn't put it to the test.

I like spicy, herbal, woodsy, and food/fruit scents in varying degrees across product types. I don't like floral scents, patchouli, or powder scents. And when it comes to things like deodorant and clothes detergent (and pantyliners/maxipads), I prefer unscented versions.

Unfortunately, the older I get, the more strongly I am affected by commercial scents, and not in a good way. Most people's perfumes give me headaches, as do makeup and perfume stores and places like Yankee Candle. On top of that, when I am having a bad lung day (asthma flareup), strong scents make it worse. :-/

I find that a lot of how I react to scents has to do less with the scent than with the base. I had a boyfriend who was allergic to the base of most commercial perfumes and claimed that it was the same as the one used in Raid bugspray. I challenged him to find some form of scent that didn't set off his allergies, that he liked and that he thought would smell good on me. He rose to the challenge and came up with an essential oil mix that I wear to this day and get lots of compliments on. The surprise is that it's a couple of flower scents.

I'm impressed that your tastes run so neatly by category. I like some florals (pikake, rose), some spices (cinnamon, ginger), some foods (notably almond, vanilla and pumpkin). I'd agree that fruit-scented is unlikely to appeal to me, but so are the herbal ones.

Well, I'm actually allergic to most perfumes, so, typically, I go with the no scent option.

However, on the rare occasion that I find something I'm *not* allergic to, I prefer spices (cinnamon, chai, nutmeg) or non-floral herbal ones (green tea, rosemary, sage, mint).

From my late high school/early college days I still own two essential oil bottles from The Body Shop: peach and vanilla. When I wore the vanilla I was told that I smelled like chocolate chip cookies (and my male friends loved it); when I wore the peach I was told I smelled like flowers. The best reaction, though, was when I wore both at the same time and I was told I smelled like peach cobbler. All of my guy friends liked that one the best. :P

Now I wear nothing, as Vekson doesn't like any perfumes and tends to be allergic to more of them than I am.

Oooooh shiny! No, I had not.

I am especially amused by the Sefirot/Kelipot and Tarot lines. I am supremely curious how those were developed. Not curious enough to buy the entire set of samples, though, unfortunately.

I was intrigued to find there was a scent for the thirty-six hidden tzaddikim (it's on the "Sin and Salvation" page).

I too am curious as to how they could develop so many scents appropriate to particular spiritual, mythological or gothic symbols. I hope this isn't like the standard Simpsons gag in which several different flavours of a product (e.g. Duff beer) are all in fact the same thing with different labels. (Kidding!)

I tend to like rose; I love plumeria. But my "main scent" is Davidoff Good Life because [livejournal.com profile] sdavido gave me several bottles when we got married. :-)
