In the past half-hour I have gotten two apparently unrelated email inquiries about area productions of Yiddish theater this spring!

One is regarding group ticket sales from The Jewish Theatre of New England: "We have a wonderful show coming up in March, The Three Yiddish Divas, which features some beautiful Yiddish singing. Does your temple have a Yiddish group that would be interested in attending for a reduced group rate?" (We don't, as such, but -- now you should all know -- the ticket info is here. March 21-22.)

The second is an audition notice:
Know any Yiddish? Ever wanted to try and act in a foreign language play? Curious about what the Yiddish theatre was all about? Audition for "Di gantse velt iz a teater" - an evening of scenes from famous Yiddish plays performed in the original Yiddish with English supertitles.

The show consists of eight scenes of approximately ten minutes each that reflect the breadth and diversity of the Yiddish theatrical tradition. These scenes will cover the history of the modern Yiddish theatre, from its 19th century inception with the plays of Abraham Goldfaden, to the avant-garde art plays and productions of the 1930's and 40's staged in New York and Moscow.

Drop-in auditions will be held through common casting:

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 3,
WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 4,
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 5

from 6 TO 9 PM at the Loeb Drama Center / Agassiz Theatre (64 Brattle Street). If you cannot make it and would like to audition outside of those times, please email caplan@fas.harvard.edu.

Auditions will consist of readings from these scenes in English translation. If you have a monologue prepared, please present it! We want to get a sense of your ability to act a diverse array of characters in a variety of genres. NO YIDDISH KNOWLEDGE IS REQUIRED. Non-Yiddish speakers are particularly encouraged to audition, as a large part of the project will involve training actors to perform short scenes in a language that may be foreign to them. Please indicate during your audition if you are interested in acting in more than one scene.

Performance dates TBA (likely mid to late April). No rehearsals or performances will be held on Shabbat. The rehearsal schedule will be very flexible (approx. 1 rehearsal / week), depending on how many scenes an actor is in.

... What are the odds that that could be made to fail to conflict with Winter's Tale? :-} Maybe I'll go to the auditions anyway, just for kicks...

Whoa... and shabbos isn't a problem? Heck, I'm tempted to audition as well, except that I'll be in Vegas during auditions. Dang. Might just email about scheduling another time.

You should definitely audition! Dobeleye (Debi Caplan) is awesome.

What is reproduced above is all the information I have, which states, "Performance dates TBA (likely mid to late April)". :-) If they establish dates in the meantime and I can find out what they are, I will update accordingly.

Ah, I missed that line.

Hmm. That has the potential for various types of work-related conflicts.
