We're going to see Bad Habit Productions' Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead tonight at 8pm at the Central Square Y. Will we see any of you there?

(I've never seen it. The inaugural [livejournal.com profile] theatreatfirst production was before my time. :-)

I love the play, but I've never seen it. Wish I could be there.

I just recently read the play for the first time and really enjoyed it. Despite, that is, my brother, dad and myself trying to watch the film version years ago on TV and turning it off after twenty minutes. Apparently the film, even with Stoppard's involvement, did get mixed reviews.

Funny, J also said he'd be willing to see this production of the play even though he hadn't enjoyed the movie, and then at intermission said he was definitely getting more out of the play. :-)

I think I may have seen the first few minutes of the movie version once, too, and kinda been at sea with it. I'm not sure I got that much more out of the play; I did stay engaged with it, but on the whole I prefer plays where things, you know, happen.

The negative reviews from the above RottenTomatoes.com link pretty much agreed the major problem was that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, given its intellectual and metatheatrical nature, doesn't really lend itself to film. It's true; some plays don't really translate well to the screen. The Fantasticks didn't fare well as a film either despite its huge success off-Broadway. (I never saw the movie but I did see the Brandeis Tymp production. God, I miss Tymp...)
