chanaleh: (good grief)

So, as alluded to on Facebook: This past Shabbat afternoon (the tail end of Chanukah) found me in the Urgent Care getting diagnosed with pyelonephritis. It's basically a complication of untreated UTI -- which I'd been fighting off for the preceding two weeks, mostly with therapeutic doses of cranberry juice, which has worked for me several times over the past several years, but not this time. OK, now I know, I should have gone to the doctor sooner. I also blame Emergen-C for discontinuing their Cranberry version (recommended to me by [livejournal.com profile] bethr for this express purpose some years back, apparently to great effect... but now no longer available, and look what happens to me). But anyway. Fever of 100.9, up from 99.2 before bed Friday night.

I narrowly escaped getting sent to the Cambridge ER for IV antibiotics: "... You should be out in a couple days." "I *what*???" Two minutes later: "You're not having any nausea, right? Okay, you'll probably be OK with a 14-day course. No, actually, we'll make it 7. Get this filled." So [livejournal.com profile] justom took me home and I spent 8 hours flat on the couch watching movies while my fever broke, then slept for the next 10, laid around for the next 10, etc.

And today I'm back at work. Trying to take it easy, but back on my feet. Modern medicine +1.

... Not bad timing for the Snowpocalypse, really. If I had to drop out for two days, those were good ones. It did blow away all my plans of getting family Xmas presents wrapped and shipped Saturday night, but hey.

Indeed! Well-timed:)

sounds not fun at all! fwiw, i really like the cranberry pills they sell at CVS (i believe the ones i usually get are the Azo brand) - i find they work much better than straight up cranberry juice.

Yikes and best wishes.

Trader Joe's has some pretty damn good yogurt, if you need to replace your good bacteria.

What a sucky way to learn a new word! Next time, try just reading the dictionary: it *has* to be more fun than that. Glad you're better and didn't end up in the hospital for days.

Eeek! Glad to know you're feeling better. Levofloxacin is super powerful stuff. I totally second the yogurt thought - the full fat, regular stuff only. The non fat/fat free/low calorie stuff is pretty much chemicals and water.

I second the regular yogurt idea.

Whole Foods carries La Liberte, a yogurt I "fell in love with" when I was in Montreal. The plum walnut flavor is so good....

Yuckos! Glad they were able to do something helpful for you.

I too have heard good things about the concentrated cranberry pills. Also just eating dried cranberries. Hope you feel better soon.

keep feeling better! if you want to replace the good bacteria, you may want to get some probiotics - trader joe's has some good ones.

(probiotic pills are much more effective than just yogurt)
