chanaleh: Snoopy at the typewriter, pondering (snoopywriter)

I sacked out at around 11:30pm last night, due to some combination of undersleptness, [one] beer with DD&MM, and the ridiculous heat wave (and, perhaps, the foray to pick up my last few worldly possessions from Tiger Boy late yesterday evening). I had at least another hour's work of stuff I could beneficially have done, but I was totally useless for any of it because Just Too Tired. I had visions of sleeping through to 7am, but then someone honked their car horn outside my window at 5:17 this morning, and... well, so much for that. I eventually got out of bed shortly after 6.

On the plus side, perhaps I might get to work early after all.
ETA: It takes nearly twice as long to drive to my workplace at 8:10am vs. 9:45am (45 minutes vs. 25). On Harvard Commencement morning, anyway. Also, I CANNOT BELIEVE that it could hit 90 degrees yesterday and drop down to 60 today. I may have to put on the Emergency Sweater I keep in my office (at least it happens to exactly match what I'm wearing today?).

I have decided to try to post more. There are so many little moments and ideas that cross my mind as worthy of writing about, and then they die on the vine because they don't seem to merit "a whole post". But I wonder if I'm doing myself -- and the venerable literary tradition of journaling -- a disservice thereby.

Gentle readers, I ask for your opinions: Is it better to post one longer post (say, per day) with several unrelated thoughts (the rambly-bits model), or to post each item separately as it arises (the microblogging model)?

Also, there needs to be a .omg top-level domain. Can one of you make that happen, please? :-)

I prefer the shorter posts.

Also, I love being up at this time of day.

I post one-line posts when it seems appropriate. And essays when THAT'S what is in my head. Just because Twitter is designed for 140-characters doesn't mean you can't post 140 characters to LiveJournal, too.

I prefer the one-longer-post model, but that's mostly because it's convenient for me if that's what other people do. My friends page has 25 entries on it (I can't figure out how to make that more), so I only trivially see new comments for the most recent 25 posts. I do have a couple of filters to screen out the most prolific of my friends, so that I can more easily check in on longer-running conversations in other entries.

(I seem to be on the wrong side of many of these differences of opinions - I also prefer no lj-cuts in people I read except for overly wide images, but I am definitely in the minority there!)

You should be able to adjust the number of entries-per-page on the "Customize Journal Style" pages, though I seem to need to walk through a few pages to get to the right one. (Different styles have different default numbers of entries per page, much to my amusement.)

Oooh, useful! (I have a vague memory of when I first started my journal, I set number of friends entries to the maximum option on a drop-down menu, but perhaps that was a previous version of the UI.)

Thanks, I was going to say something along these lines. :-D

It does appear that 50 is the maximum, no matter what number one puts there.

You can, incidentally, set LJ to automatically expand all LJ-cuts for you. I did this ages ago because LJ-cuts annoy me, too.

I have, however, forgotten how.

I find smaller bits and thoughts posted separately to be more digestable and more interesting when I can consider them individually.

I'm generally in favor of posting, with no preference for how long the posts are.

I'm probably the last person to advise on this since my posts are just as random in length. Just post what comes to your mind.

Given that I tend to make a longer post with a bunch of bullet-pointed, unrelated thoughts, I can hardly object to not having essay-worthy posts. That said, long or short, I don't particularly mind either way. More posts are generally good by me.

For my personal lj-reading style, I am more likely to miss posts if there are lots of them. But either way works. =)

I find that if I set my mind to posting more then it's easier to let each posting take its natural length. This may work for you as well.

I'd go for longer posts. Short posts are for Facebook.

Heh -- and 90 degrees wasn't even a record. The record is 92, which is 22 degrees above the average high for the day.
