With great power comes great responsibility.
Sunday, June 13th, 2010 10:50 pmAs I had whined mentioned to some of you, today (yes, a Sunday) I had to be up at 6:30am to get to work by ~8:15 with bagels in hand for a work meeting. (Mercifully, I didn't have to run the meeting or even really contribute to it, I just had to make sure the breakfast was nicely set up, and be there to take notes and do a little schmoozing. And the meeting itself seemed to go over quite well.) And then there was Graduation, and then I wandered back upstairs to clean up from the meeting breakfast (and actually eat some myself) -- and stuff and things culminating in this evening's cue-to-cue, but never mind all that right now.
What I haven'tcrowed about mentioned to most of you is that they recently gave me a promotion. :-) Which isn't even to say that they are giving me more responsibility; this is one of those "officially promote me up to the level of responsibility I've already taken on" sort of deals, which is just fine by me. I'm just past my 2-year anniversary date, and have -- at least subjectively! -- easily doubled the level of my responsibility in that time. Lots of days that end with the sentiment "I'm really not getting paid enough to think this much." That sort of thing.
I was hired under the title of "Marketing and Development Associate". They gave me a token raise a few months into my tenure (bringing me from "just under" to "just over" what I had been making at my previous full-time job), and I gave myself a titular promotion sometime in the past year by the simple expedient of changing it in my email signature and on my business cards. (In all fairness, it was in response to a complaint from a parent, after I designed an online survey regarding school communications and emailed it around to the parent body, that "this is not a marketing issue and why aren't you focusing on academics blah blah blah," that I said "They're right, this should not at all be seen as a marketing tactic," and promptly edited my title to Communications Officer / Webmaster, which combination was much more reflective of what I was actually handling by that point.)
Sometime in mid-May, BossMan brought me up to his office one day and said, in short, "We're promoting you. Pick your title." There's no money in the budget for raises, you realize; but fortunately, an actual, merited promotion is another story. :-}
He said, "How about Communications Director?" I said, "Hmm, I actually find that a tad intimidating, I might rather keep it to Communications Manager, but I'll get back to you." To which, later that night,
justom,
mjperson and
ilhander all immediately said "NOOO! When someone asks you if you're a god, YOU SAY YES! You WANT Director on your resume!", and so it seems that Director of Communications is indeed the settled choice.
It was supposed to take effect July 1, with the fiscal year, but then they seem to have managed to speed it up. (Which is awesome, because I'm suddenly eligible for contribution-matching to the pension fund, and am about to resume deductions for my own health insurance coverage, and and and.) So I've accordingly edited my email signature once again. And vowed to use my leveled-up powers only for good and never for evil.
So, on the whole, a net win. :-D
What I haven't
