UGH.

The last two nights, I've had the luxury of being able to get into bed by midnightish and sleep relatively late (Sunday morning, until 10am; today, until about 8:30 since there's nothing requiring my presence at work before 10).

What happens? For the first and second time in a good two months, I wake up at 4-5am, promptly have a jolt of completely fruitless anxiety (Here's an email you should have sent before bed! Here's the phone* you should have bought! Here's something you didn't manage to finish at work on Friday! Hardly anyone's** signed up for Honorable Menschen auditions!) and lie there for AN HOUR AND A HALF in the middle of the night, simultaneously bolt-awake and so tired I'm ready to die.

UGH.

*I've been working for almost that same two months on buying a new cell phone, since my Treo 680 has some kind of glitch that makes it unable to boot properly (long technical description of its behavior elided), and my 650 has long had a nasty habit of rebooting itself several times an hour while on phonecalls. I finally decided I would pony up for the T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide... and I went and got it Saturday night (blowing off 2 of the 3 parties I was supposed to make an appearance at), and I just really don't care for it, aside from the fact that it costs over $200 even with 2-year contract. I do not need this level of complexity in my life, I just don't. I'm keeping it the rest of the week (I have a 14-day return window, including to cancel the contract extension) -- but I've already, since Sunday morning, gone and ordered a replacement unlocked Treo 680. Which is all I really wanted in the first place if it would only *work*, and means I can spend my birthday money from my dad on that refurbished Netbook instead. Meanwhile, if you call or text me this week, please let me know who you are, since my contact syncing on the myTouch is so far highly spotty.

**except [livejournal.com profile] preraphaelite, yay!

And while I'm at it: Why did my body decide that the way to celebrate my 38th birthday was to erupt two ENORMOUS pimples on my chin? Is this some misguided attempt at "youthful"? Huh? HUH???

UGH, indeed. Sorry the ruminative thinking has you lying awake. Hope the new phone is just what you need and everything else sorts itself out.

If Life weren't insanely busy I'd go to the Menschen auditions; but right now, between family, homework and the newspaper I'm just a wee bit booked. I'd consider going just for the fun of it but there's a gubernatorial forum in Boston at 6...

Heh. Well, thanks both for thinking of it and for not wanting to waste our mutual time ;-)

Hmph. I had a similar experience last night (may post) - maybe there's some kind of weird alien bad-sleep ray in the area.

When I'm up in the middle of the night thinking of all the things I need to do, I've found it useful to write them down. (it helps to have a pen with a built in light :)

I've had a Treo 680 since they first came out, and I haven't yet replaced it (the Android phones are tempting, but I'm waiting to see what Palm will come out with next (after the rumored Pre 2 and Pixi 2).

I definitely support that advice, but the thing is, almost everything that was thrashing around my brain WAS already written down somewhere! -- I think. I know it's a useful processing tool, though. Hmm.

...WAS already written down somewhere!

I find that it helps both to write it down, and keep everything that's been written down in the same place-- a common notebook. I actually have three notebooks (sketchbook, which allows for drawing; Moleskine, which is highly portable; and my daily planner) but I know that anything written down is in one of those three, which eliminates the anxiety of "I know it's written down somewhere..."

I've been using the same Motorola RAZR, which makes calls, has a phone book, and an alarm clock. The new phones are indeed shiny, but I'm not jazzed even nearly enough to run out anytime soon and throw money around.

I have basically two inboxes now, my Hipster PDA (for collection) and my Nirvana webpage (where the former eventually gets processed into). The index cards would probably have been the best way to offload stuff from my wakeful mind... 'cause even if specific items are already noted in one of the two places, if (as David Allen says) it's still weighing on you, you haven't truly gotten it off your mind! Maybe I should try that keeping that bedside tonight in case of recurrence.

And, I do deeply love having the internet in my pocket; I'm never again going to be able to manage with "just a phone", and I am fine with that. But all I need is that -- the Internet. I don't need to sync my Gmail and my Facebook stream and live weather reports all animated on my frontpage; my old bookmark buttons and hotkeys were working just great.

I don't think Dave's on LJ any more, so it falls to me to make the obligatory G&S reference about repose taboo'd by anxiety. :)

Sorry you got visited by the Awake Fairies. They're the worst. Best wishes for the Menschen auditions!

I considerd replacing my HTC Mogul last winter when the battery died and ended up buying a new battery instead, because none of the new phones available actually excited me. I suspect when I finally do replace it, I'll have to try out all of my friends phones again and decide which one I like the best.

At least, of late, my anxiety has been kind enough to only bother me when I'm already awake.

it seems to be going around

There's been far too little sleep around our household, too.

I feel your pain regarding the Treo. I have been delaying and delaying the inevitable upgrade to a new crackberry for as long as I can.

I had a personal trainer who used to recommend some very light stretching or 5 minutes of yoga if I found myself awake, mind racing at night. Mind racing = muscles tense = hard to sleep. *hugs*

We've been experiencing sleep deficits too.

T-Mobile has a way of backing up your phone book which should help when switching phones.

I hope your audition attracts the voices you seek.

I think this is my fault. I've been getting *too much* sleep, and it's been throwing me off. Damn Morpheus.
