So there's this hurricane en route.

Which is going to sweep through NYC later today and then on up to Boston Sunday morning, by which time it may have downgraded to Tropical Storm.

Also, you may have incidentally noticed, we're moving scheduled to move on Sunday.

Yes, we know this is suboptimal.

No, we don't know if the move will really be able to take place. We have to call the movers tonight and see what they say. (When we called them Thursday, they said "Oh yeah, totally going ahead! Unless we can't, of course, in which case we can't reschedule you until Sept. 6, so basically you're screwed!")

So.

Either way, we still have to finish all the packing today just in case, so anyone [local enough to travel safely!] who wants to come over this afternoon and help pack the kitchen, plastic-wrap furniture, etc. will be rewarded with pizza. Probably from Pescatore. :-)

Also, we have a stereo, possibly a vacuum cleaner, and undoubtedly some other fun things (four pounds of potatoes??) still to give away!

Which reminds me also: WTF do I do with an entire box of tech trash (cables, external disk drives, etc)? I have three dead laptops I need to dispose of, I know I can take those to MicroCenter or something, but the rest? (That is, in the next 24 hours with minimal time investment on my part.) reuse?

I hope this isn't a bad time for a question, but is Microcenter reasonably near a T stop? I need a new computer for my Linux experiments, and I'd like as many places to look as I can find.

Sorry I can't help with the packing today. I hope it doesn't sound trite to wish you the best with it. (If Irene had the proper empathy, she'd at least move your stuff to its new home for you after causing all this trouble! :-) )

Microcent is about a mile from the Central Square T-station.

Is PCs For Everyone still around? They used to be a good place to get Linux PCs. They're near the Lechemere T-station.

PCs For Everyone closed their retail operation several years ago.

Just to be sure, I went to pcsforeveryone.com to check. It looks like they still sell home desktops. I don't know if the place is still in Norwell, where I heard it moved a few years ago, but maybe I'll see if the phone number does indeed give me a person. (The site says it's open nine-to-five weekdays.) Even though I do think I need a new Linux box, I've had eight good years plus from the one I got from there in 2003; if I can get what I want without having to visit, then I won't care so much if it's still in Norwell or some other hard place to get to.

Microcenter

Depends on your definition of "reasonable".
It's right on the river, between River St. and Magazine Beach. Google has a good map of it.

If you're disposing of old computers, remove the hard drives and destroy them (sledge hammer, large rock, ....).

I can safely take and recycle all the dead tech equipment through my work, if you wish. I'll poke after I get freed up later today.

Ohhh, that would be a godsend. The laptops too? Batteries, cables, etc? :-}

Definitely be in touch at your convenience. I will big-time owe you dinner on my next visit (even if it means I bring over takeout...).

If that doesn't work I will deal with getting them recycled via technotrash for you, but that ends up costing $1/pound.

I'm happy to pay to dispose of them, if it means keeping them out of the landfill! Thanks, I'll keep you posted.

I hate to be the bearer of this news, but speaking as a New Yorker, I have to say that not only will tomorrow's move not take place, but you really probably don't want it to. Trying to move your stuff in during a hurricane with driving rain, flooding, and 65-mile-an-hour winds isn't something I would wish on most people.

So are you screwed? If it were me, I would make such a royal pain in the ass of myself with the movers, calling them every five minutes, demanding to speak to ever-higher-up authorities, etc., that they finally bumped me to Monday or Tuesday just to get rid of me. If you're moving to NYC, you'll need to hone your skill of being a tenacious nuisance anyway. :)

In any case, good luck to you, and stay safe. No schedule is worth risking harm to you and yours.

My guess is it's out of our hands, as they'll be closing the bridges to commercial vehicles! So, new schedule TBD. I'll keep you posted.

BTW, Madeleine asked about you tonight. It's been ages, but she did enjoy meeting the two of you here. Good luck with the move, whenever it does happen.

Aw! Please give her our regards. I'm wishing the best for you guys too. :-)

Move's been officially rescheduled to Sunday Sept. 4!

You don't have a USB cable for an external hard drive, do you? Perchance?

From: [identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com
Hmm... what would need to be on the non-USB end of the cable? :-) If you have a visual of what you need, I can check.

Nice! Yes, the destination end is the important bit -- this is helpful. I'll see what I can turn up.

I sorted all the cables last night, and didn't see anything apparently fitting this inlet :-/
