Amid the boxes

Here it is Wednesday, my third official morning as a New Yorker. :-} And the cable Internet guy came today, so we now have a happy little wireless router blinking away on top of the big bookshelf in the corner.

Unpacking is proceeding apace. We have basically squished all the boxes into the office and the front entryway, so that we have the use of the big airy living room space to gradually set things up into. (The corner nearest the galley kitchen, we walled off with bookcases to create a pantry area, which I personally think was a stroke of genius, because no way was all that stuff fitting in here any other way!) [livejournal.com profile] ablock asked for pictures, but I think it's going to be another week or so before it's anything to show off.

It's tedious work, the finding of new homes for everything, especially when there isn't *quite* enough room for everything to just spread out. But it *is* fun, at the same time. And it's incredibly novel for me NOT to have anything else I must do but putter around and deal with housey things and maybe run out to the grocery store or, just for kicks, the hardware store, and make some food every few hours.

The other incredibly novel thing for me is to be making a shared home with and for [livejournal.com profile] justom, about which I will say little except to marvel at the depth of contentment and peace in my heart, of a kind I could barely imagine a year or even six months ago. Everyone knows that the Hebrew word for peace is shalom, but not everyone knows that it comes from the root word shalem, meaning wholeness, or fullness. It's like that. Oh yes. Even amid the piles of boxes and the not-yet-employment* (which ought to be causing me some anxiety about money but really isn't, at least for another month or so) and the constant street noise and vibration making my body hum at all hours of the day and night... there is peace.

*On which note: I had a job interview yesterday (at a certain Reform Jewish day school on the UWS), which was most excellent, and they plan to have me back in the next week or two for a half-day visit to meet the rest of the team. Yay! Wish me luck!

Also, I'm going to have to come up to Boston sometime in the next ~5 days to hand off my car to its buyer. I won't make it to the End-of-Summer Party (lunch plans with [livejournal.com profile] jessruth!), but am hoping to time things so as to get to see [livejournal.com profile] theatreatfirst's As You Like It. :-} I'll try to keep you all apprised.

I totally hear you, right down to the bookcase in the kitchen for a pantry. It's slow work, finding new homes for things that I had set up my way in my old home -- but it's so satisfying to be creating a new shared home together with someone you love! We did our first joint grocery shopping last night, and even that was a fun adventure.

You know, it kills me that you and I have been going through this parallel experience and unable to share more of it, being as the nature of it was our both moving OUT of Somerville!! I hope I'll get to see your place sometime. (And you know you're always welcome here!)

I know! We are hoping that we'll have a sleeper sofa in the living room for guests (and of course Rachael, Aaron's daughter), so I hope you will come visit, and we definitely want to come in to New York, after King Richard's closes so Aaron has a day off now and again. Maybe by then both of us will be unpacked... although honestly, I haven't been pushing too much on my end. I've been doing a few boxes a day, but also making time to go out and explore and have adventures, to try to make Quincy feel like home and keep me from missing Somerville too much.

There is nothing quite like that sense of peace and completeness; I'm happy you have it. I hope RSS hires you.

I'm guessing that RSS is the school it sounds like it is. If so, renewed good luck, as CRS was where I spent most of my high holy days, when growing up.

Yay for contentment! And I hope the timing works out for you to start a new job just when you've finished getting set up.

If she's the buyer, then yes, I can think of no better car: after all, IIRC it comes with a KoL bumpah stickah pre-installed!

When I moved from my first Eugene apartment into my second, it was from an 800 sq ft 2 br into what amounted to a one-room efficiency. The orocess of unpacking was really lovely, and I have not been as fully unpacked since then in any home we've been in. I had to load boxes onto each other to free the shelves, then unpack boxes onto the shelves to clear away the boxes, then move boxes to free more shelves, then move things piecemeal from the first set of shelves to the second set, so as to clear away more boxes...to make room to maneuver so I could set up the *real* shelves the way they would be in real life. That was *after* locating and deploying the coffeemaker!
