Last night we were kept awake well past 5am by throbbing hip-hop bass lines from somewhere in the downstairs vicinity. Oy. Only after
justom went down and ascertained that it was in fact immediately downstairs (but unresponsive to knocking on their door, no surprise) did I think to apply the universal "cut it the f**k out" signal of stomping on the floor five times. This had the desired effect: it did come on again a bit later, but more quietly and not so cell-pervading, hardly worth getting up to register another complaint.
So, rather than get up at 7:30am with
justom, I managed to stay in bed and mostly asleep until 10:30. I'm grateful to be on vacation and get to do that, but I feel awful for him today, poor love.
Speaking of being on vacation, since I have the luxury of time right now, here's the recap of what else I did this weekend:
Thursday: got a "no thanks" from day school #1, alas; had an in-person interview with day school #2, then wandered around and did some shopping including a binge at the Kosher Marketplace (meat galore! olive spread! black & whites!).
In the evening we went down to Chelsea to see a screening of the Shakespeare's Globe production of Henry VIII -- which they were actually putting on when we were there last August, though what we went to see there was the back-to-back Henry IVs instead. This one was a little slow going in the beginning, but generally a treat to watch.
Friday: waited at home all day (mostly puttering around on the computer) for a delivery from Staples of one last bookcase that we turned out to need. Naturally, they arrived with it at 5:05 pm (!), leaving me not quite enough time to get showered, out the door, and downtown for "final dress" for Iolanthe.
We ran through it twice from 6 to 10pm; I'd already listened to it twice through during the day; I pretty much never get tired of it, ever. Some of the cast went out for drinks after, so I got to socialize with some new folks, which made me happy; then I headed back uptown to join
justom at a birthday party.
Saturday: blew off services at Rimonim and a shabbos picnic lunch in order to have lunch (tasty Ethiopian food at nearby Zoma) and a subsequent tour of Morningside Park with Sam, my new buddy who I met at the NEGASS marathon in June and who is now sponsoring my membership application to the Blue Hill Troupe. Came home, unpacked some more books, snuggled, and then ran off to call for our performance of Iolanthe for the G&S Society of New York (in which I was singing chorus).
justom and
jessruth both came to see it, and I got goosebumps as always from all of Iolanthe's scenes, and a good time was had by all.
Sunday: woke up around 8 and spent the rest of the morning putting in 10 new job applications (in about 4 hours), go me! It's exhausting in that (a) it requires a great infusion of energy and (b) it's like slaying a hydra: for every posting I find, I can branch off and find three more I should also apply to. I guess that's good, though.
Anyway, lounged around with
justom a bit, then went to a clothing swap up in Washington Heights (I'd never seen the YU campus before) and got to hang out with
debka_notion,
terriqat and
cynara_linnaea. Then back downtown for my 7pm audition for BHT, which I think went reasonably well, but it'll depend heavily on who else they get and like (apparently this is the largest applicant class they've had in years). Stopped off for a Trader Joe's run on the way home, since I was in the neighborhood; came home and made some dinner, and hung out for a while when
justom brought his friend DF (recently of VitaCoco fame) up for a drink. Tried to go to bed at a reasonable hour, but was largely thwarted, as described at the top of this post. :-P
For today, I'd been thinking it would be a good day to get to a museum, but the Met is closed on Mondays, of course, and so is the Frick Collection. Maybe I'll try for the MoMA. Off to put some chicken in the crockpot and get rolling.
P.S. I almost forgot to mention: 'tis the nineteenth of Septembarrrr, known across the seven seas as International Talk Like A Pirate Day! Avast!
