Last night we were kept awake well past 5am by throbbing hip-hop bass lines from somewhere in the downstairs vicinity. Oy. Only after [livejournal.com profile] justom went down and ascertained that it was in fact immediately downstairs (but unresponsive to knocking on their door, no surprise) did I think to apply the universal "cut it the f**k out" signal of stomping on the floor five times. This had the desired effect: it did come on again a bit later, but more quietly and not so cell-pervading, hardly worth getting up to register another complaint.

So, rather than get up at 7:30am with [livejournal.com profile] justom, I managed to stay in bed and mostly asleep until 10:30. I'm grateful to be on vacation and get to do that, but I feel awful for him today, poor love.

Speaking of being on vacation, since I have the luxury of time right now, here's the recap of what else I did this weekend... )

For today, I'd been thinking it would be a good day to get to a museum, but the Met is closed on Mondays, of course, and so is the Frick Collection. Maybe I'll try for the MoMA. Off to put some chicken in the crockpot and get rolling.

P.S. I almost forgot to mention: 'tis the nineteenth of Septembarrrr, known across the seven seas as International Talk Like A Pirate Day! Avast!

Well, first, some shameless promotion of others: two cool things I'm going to. This Thursday night, Jews in Science Fiction, brought to you by The Future Rabbi Josh Breindel ). And Saturday afternoon is the closing matinee of MITG&SP's Pirates of Penzance. )

Now the self-promotion:

This Saturday night, December 13th, my first official vocal recording will be released: Honorable Menschen's debut album, By the River. I sing solos on 2 of the 12 tracks. Plus I designed the cover and all the associated graphics. Thus, if you are a fan of me, you should own this album. ;-) Also, there's a concert. The concert is free. FREE! With FREE REFRESHMENTS! Come on down to [livejournal.com profile] tremontstshul [directions here] between 8pm and 10pm! And if you pre-order a CD and come to the concert to pick it up, you can save a couple bucks over buying it in cash that evening. -- Or if you simply can't make the concert, but expect to be in Boston anytime in the next 6 weeks, you can still pre-order it "for pickup" and I'll hand-deliver it to you, saving you the shipping, because I love you. (Or else you can feel free to wait and buy it on iTunes later. Yes, really. I'll post the link to that when it's up.)

This Sunday, December 14th, there is a Chanukah Art & Craft Fair where I will be selling MuffinButtons as well as my Judaic graphic artwork (and, yes, Honorable Menschen CDs, and I might have Falling August CDs to give away if you ask in advance). And [livejournal.com profile] mizarchivist and [livejournal.com profile] anotherjen and [livejournal.com profile] chaiya [in absentia] and [livejournal.com profile] red_queen and many other cool people will all be displaying and selling their cool stuff. Admission is free. FREE! With FREE REFRESHMENTS! Come on down to [livejournal.com profile] tremontstshul [directions here] between 10:30am and 1:30pm!

Lastly, for you northwest suburbanites, the Menschen are also performing next Friday night 12/19 at Temple Emanuel in Andover. 6:30pm! We're probably performing in Chelsea the morning of Sunday 12/21, as well -- ping me if you want details on that.

Take a picture of yourself right now.
Don't change your clothes, don't fix your hair... just take a picture.
Post that picture with NO editing.
Post these instructions with your picture.

'Tis Talk Like A Pirate Day! Arrr!

(Yes, this is what I'm wearing to shul tonight. Also, writing lame pirate jokes for a dvARRRR Torah at dinner! And bringing the rum!)

... or "So, Erica, what ARE you going to do with your Copious Free Time now that you are freed of wedding planning forevermore??"

REVISED for additions and clarity, 9/11/08

September:

THU 09/11, 6:30-8:30pm: [livejournal.com profile] tremontstshul Fall Kickoff BBQ

FRI 09/12, 8pm (zoom over after shul): Closing weekend of MTG's Into the Woods (starring [livejournal.com profile] jmspencer).

SAT 09/13, 8pm: Jesus Christ Superstar, starring [livejournal.com profile] cycon, at St. Paul's Parish Hall (26 Washington St.) in Malden. Sept 12, 13, 14 at 8pm; tickets $15. I pretty much have to go the Saturday night, due to standing Friday and Sunday conflicts. Anyone interested? (Mr. [livejournal.com profile] chanaleh, even if he were interested, will be doing the Retrocogitator Puzzle Challenge.)

SUN 09/14, 10:30am-12n: [livejournal.com profile] tremontstshul Pre-High-Holiday Open House.

WED 09/17, 6:30-8:00 pm: Celebrate The Macallan: free Scotch tasting! Back Bay Events Center (180 Berkeley St., Boston). [livejournal.com profile] gilana and [livejournal.com profile] ablock are definitely going; I'm hoping to join them (caveat: if my practical obligations do not overwhelm).

SAT 09/20: Six Flags with [livejournal.com profile] ablock (with 9/27 and 11/1 as backup dates). ETA: I have been alerted [waves to tahamill!] that this date is reserved for Out in the Park. As tickets are being sold publicly, however, we're TOTALLY still going. Though maybe not in drag costume particularly. :-) (Note further: apparently this is actually controversial, hmm. I think we're buying the online tickets and going regardless -- it could be really fascinating, but at minimum it should be unusually un-crowded.)

ETA: SUN 09/21: The Salem Pirate Faire with [livejournal.com profile] gilana, [livejournal.com profile] smacaski, and [livejournal.com profile] shumashi. In costume. Clearly, any gossiping to be done will have to take place in pirate-speak. Arrrr!

SAT 09/27, 8pm: Recital by [livejournal.com profile] heliopsis and friends, First Congregational Church of Somerville (89 College Ave., Davis Sq).

SUN 09/28, 2pm: Romeo and Juliet, starring the inimitable [livejournal.com profile] justom, with Hovey Players in Waltham, 9/19-10/4. The only Sunday matinee is 9/28, so although a bunch of Firsties appear to be going the first weekend, I shall hang back and go with [livejournal.com profile] gilana and friends. It's an intimate 52-seat house, so we need to order tickets pronto. Who's with us?

MON 9/29: Erev Rosh Hashanah at [livejournal.com profile] tremontstshul (where I get to spend the entire High Holidays with my husband, yay! because I gave up the Swampscott choir gig this year)

TUE 9/30: 2nd-night R"H dinner chez [livejournal.com profile] ablock

not to mention fitting in a dozen or so other obligations and opportunities before the end of this month )

October:
Does anyone but me really need to look this far ahead on my calendar? srsly. )

I'm fairly certain there are things already getting scheduled into my last week of October, but I'll be buggered if I have written any of them down so far. :-}
chanaleh: (crow's nest)
Hey, happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] flinx!
Hey, congratulations on your defense, [livejournal.com profile] tahnan!

Hey, [livejournal.com profile] muchabstracted, did you happen to see the Sunday Globe Magazine a week ago? There was a column in it that we thought you might find amusing. (I've just been lame about posting since then.)

Upcoming theatrical events performances not to be missed:

(1) SchoolHouse Rock Live! -- The Musical
http://www.corestagecompany.com/schoolhouse.html
http://www.regenttheatre.com/events/school.htm

(2) [livejournal.com profile] theatreatfirst's Merry Wives of Windsor, of course, opens this Friday night. (HINT: this is the one that I am in!)
http://theatreatfirst.org/current/merry-wives/mww.htm
http://www.livejournal.com/community/theatreatfirst/27692.html

(3) Also this Friday: the Harvard Pops Orchestra's PIRATE concert!
http://boston.craigslist.org/eve/106639981.html
http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~pops

(4) The One Man Star Wars Trilogy (which some of you may remember seeing performed at the Worldcon Masquerade Halftime last August) is at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston, tonight through Sunday.
http://www.onemanstarwars.com/star_wars.html
http://www.broadwayinboston.com/html/shows/One%20Man%20Star%20Wars/index.html

Geez, anyone would think I never do anything but theatre. ;-) I'm laying out books these days, too, I swear.
chanaleh: (crow's nest)
I have successfully completed my first day of work. :-)

Meet me for drinks at Orleans (Holland St. in Davis Sq.) at 8:15pm to celebrate.

Those observing Talk Like A Pirate Day may order grog.

Arrrrrr...gh!

Would you believe, ALL remaining Pirates performances are now sold out?!?! Even the Saturday matinee. (The girl on the phone told me they've been completely sold out since "a week ago". Meaning I could have conceivably ordered tickets if I'd done it when I decided that that was the show I could catch.)

So -- sorry, gang. We'll all have to find our piratey goodness elsewhere.

I mean, it's not like I needed another thing to do this weekend (with Chanukah and all). It's just.... after all that! Un-be-frickin'-lievable. (Ah, the expletive infix. Ray Jackendoff would be so proud. :-)

I will e-mail an announcement to gsp-cast (etc.), I guess, just to follow up.

On the bright side, I did order our 5 tickets for The Golden Dreydl on Sunday (with Ellen Kushner and Shirim).
chanaleh: (snoopydock)
Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] skreeky!! -- And [livejournal.com profile] lucretia_borgia, and apparently [livejournal.com profile] rikchik'n'[livejournal.com profile] cnoocy. Wow.

And also, it is Chanukah. *glow* I went to the MIT lighting of the test-tube menorah. No blowtorch, though.

... OMG have I been busy. I mean, when I say that, you know it's serious. My house is a total shambles and I haven't bought but two Xmas gifts (and one Chanukah one* that I gave tonight). Largely it's because work is so insane. (Though not so insane that I couldn't decorate my [office] door with a serious, not to say strident, Hebrew-school-style Chanukah display for the office party tomorrow afternoon. Let's just say it incorporates Al ha-Nisim -- including Bimei Matityahu. I had fun.)

*Actually, there's also the one I bought myself: a doumbek (finally!). It is cobalt blue ceramic. I am inordinately pleased. I have a proper drum! Not just a lame-o tambourine!

Sunday's art show went well. I sold some stuff -- and not only that... ten pairs of my earrings are now in the Out of the Blue Gallery next door to my house. (Deb Priestly came to the show and bought two pairs from me and offered to take more on consignment. Yay!)

And [livejournal.com profile] jessruth's visit was great, except for it getting cut short by half because her new nephew had the audacity to arrive half a day before his scheduled delivery. Doesn't he know about Jewish Standard Time yet? Sheesh. ;-)

Oh yeah, so, this Saturday:
(1) Pirates of Penzance outing to the 12/11 matinee (2pm) at HRG&SP. Please reconfirm if you wish me to order you a ticket. list behind this cut, currently up to 8 )
(2) See me and [livejournal.com profile] ladypsyche perform with Honorable Menschen at a Tremont St. Chanukah concert! 7:30-8:30pm at Temple Beth Shalom. All are welcome to attend.

And then there's Shabbat dinner and the Lord Chancellor's housewarming -- both Friday -- and all the assorted Chanukah madness... but never mind that for now. For now I am going to read Coraline (one of several charming little gifts tonight) and go to sleep before it is terribly late, so that I can get up tomorrow and do it all over again.
chanaleh: (leila)
How to inoculate ourselves against post-show letdown? I know: Let's plan something fun for next month when we have lives again!

[Poll #385160]
chanaleh: (pirate)
I can't make this stuff up. )

Saw Murder (yay!), but missed Anything Goes (boo). Stopped by [livejournal.com profile] ceo and [livejournal.com profile] gosling's for what should have been only a few minutes, except that then I got my shoulders and forearms blissfully liquified by [livejournal.com profile] nacht_musik, whom I owe big time.

7am call for [livejournal.com profile] mitgsp light hang tomorrow. Bed now.
