Dad's surgery

Oh yeah, and also, my dad was having his hip replaced yesterday morning, out at the Mayo Clinic. My stepmother left me a message at the end of the day to let me know that all was well, although he'll be too out of it to call me himself for a couple days. I kinda wish she'd left me a number to call back to, anyway, but I was still grateful she called.
He's supposed to remain in the hospital for 5 days, but I don't know how long they'll stick around Rochester after that to recuperate before endeavoring to drive home. I hope that goes OK. I want to send him books for Father's Day to keep him entertained during his bed rest (recommendations welcomed), but I don't want to send anything until I think they're going to be home.
My mom had *her* hip replaced *last* summer (same side, too: the right). She's been doing great since, from what I understand -- at least I haven't heard any complaints in a long time! -- so I hope it's as good for my dad. Though I suppose I should also take the warning from this that my own joints are likely to reach their expiration date(s) by the time I'm 60... Good thing someone is bringing kosher glucosamine to market :-)
