Never in a million years...
Wednesday, September 25th, 2013 05:28 pmThis is being posted for the benefit of my lurking public, since the previous entries about it were friendslocked.
As you may have noted either on Facebook or on my calendar: since I had off for first days of Sukkot last weekend, I went home to visit my dad in Indiana.
Last time I was there (in 2009), I had a very quick weekend trip and didn't take time out to see any of my other friends still in the area, so this time I wanted to do some of that.
One of them was... this guy I happened to have been madly in love with long-distance from like 1994 to 1997, who had then dropped mostly out of touch for most of the intervening years. (Without trying to give all the backstory over again, here's an earlier public reference from 2006 for context: LJ | DW )
We got back in touch this summer, because when I sent out a mass email in mid-July announcing my change of address, I included him on a whim, and he wrote me back the next day. Turned out his marriage had split up over a year and a half earlier, and his divorce had actually just been finalized... in late June. Providing some closure.
So, it was really nice to be able to talk again, and we started trading a bunch of relaxed friendly email. And so when I said I was actually going to be in town, we made arrangements to hang out the first evening I was there.
And not only did we drop right back into the comfortable connection we always used to have... not only did we uncover the fact that those feelings never really went away on either side... but to my incredible surprise, the more we talked about everything, it slowly became apparent how well we fit together. Personally and emotionally. An order of magnitude better, even, than we ever did in the beforetimes.
I don't want to say a lot more than that about it right here, right now, but suffice it to say, it is a happening thing. It has been the most surreal week of my entire life... and at the same time, the most real.
As
ablock went on to say, "Crazy things happen, so sometimes they have to happen to us. :-)"
We've already racked up about 6 hours on the phone since I came back on Sunday evening. Today we just booked airline tickets for trips in both directions over the next 3 months, with some further plans in the offing for after that. And we're spending Christmas in NYC and New Year's in Boston, and he's probably coming out again right after that to meet me at
arisia -- so that you can all (for some values of "all"!) get to meet him, and I literally cannot wait because you are all going to like him SO MUCH OMG. (And when is the last time you heard me say that about someone I brought home? Seriously?)
Sometimes in life, you get a second chance.
More gushing to come; stay tuned. :-)
Chag sameach to those celebrating (starting tonight, very shortly!). Um, and also I'm coming up to Boston tomorrow for Simchat Torah at
tremontstshul, and staying with
ablock and M and A and Z. So I'm booked doing shul things morning and evening, but I have a little time Thu and Fri afternoons, if anyone is free to get together. Will post to FB as well so as to reach more than my remaining 20 LJ readers.
