We are home
Tuesday, March 4th, 2014 08:15 amAnd we are married. :-)
... Actually, we've been home for over two weeks already, but -- perhaps unsurprisingly -- I haven't managed to sit down and write an entry in that time.
We had the ceremony the morning of Valentine's Day, at Ryles Jazz Club in Cambridge; a fairly small affair followed by a simple bagel brunch.
We had planned in the first place to take the bus up from NYC on Wednesday evening, so when a major snow-and-ice storm threatened for Thursday, our own plans were not terribly disturbed -- though it threw the travel plans of several other folks into chaos (and a couple of them ended up missing the ceremony. including one of our designated chuppah-bearers). On arriving at Alewife, we borrowed a car from some Somerville friends who were traveling in Australia and missing the wedding but had kindly offered us their car for the duration, and drove out to
mercurysparkle and
kalessin's, where we got to sleep in and then make our leisurely, snowy way in to Cambridge.
The original reasoning for being in town Thursday had been to handle any last-minute logistics, but since a few things got shuffled around by the storm, there really weren't any to handle, aside from picking up the champagne and kosher wine to drop off chez
lillibet; so after that all we did was check straight into our hotel (the Marlowe, over by Lechmere). Being right in the neighborhood, we had a pre-wedding dinner date at the Helmand, which is one of the places
etrace remembers our going when he visited me in Boston the first time in 1994 (only it looks totally different now since they'd completely renovated and expanded sometime in the interim). And then we went back and puttered around: wrote out our vows for the ceremony, pressed the chuppah, tested
etrace's video camera, greeted the intrepid
jessruth when she got in, etc.
Friday morning the snow had basically stopped; we got up, had coffee in the lobby, collected
jessruth, and drove to Ryles. And there was a wedding. :-)
etrace has put together the raw video and posted it on my YouTube, so you can all now see the whole thing right here. We are very grateful to
toyb and possibly one or two other shul friends who stepped in to staff the camera. We are also very grateful to
c1, who came (with his lady S) and took pictures as his gift to us; I unfortunately promptly mislaid the SD card he brought me with the hi-res files, so I haven't yet produced a curated album, but you can see the whole preview gallery (1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5), or a few selections here.
I should note (if I haven't previously) that the officiant was Rim Meirowitz, who was my rabbi in Waltham back in 1993-1996 -- notably, exactly when
etrace and I first knew each other -- and who sponsored me for my conversion in 1995-1996. We've worked together a bit over the years since he has several times referred couples to me for custom ketubahs... because he is kind of a specialist in interfaith weddings. So when we had decided to have the wedding in Boston, he was the natural person to call, and was really overjoyed to be part of this process with us.
After the ceremony and the breakfast, we retired to our hotel... to entertain our adoring public remotely via Facebook. :-) It was really kind of fun, like watching our own royal wedding on TV. But we managed to put the computers down every so often, too.
And then
lillibet had graciously offered to host us a little cocktail party in the evening, by way of reception, so we headed over there and sat rather dizzily in the middle of the crowd of well-wishers and ate many delightful dainties and far too much cake. :-)
And on Saturday we got up and drove to Manchester, Vermont, and spent two days hiding out in the Inn at Ormsby Hill, which I had picked out because it promised both an in-room fireplace and two-person Jacuzzi tub, as well as hot breakfast and beautiful mountain scenery, and we made maximal use of all of these. But not for nearly long enough, because Monday afternoon we drove back to NYC so I could be back at work on Tuesday. Sigh.
Plans are firming up for tying things up at work and moving next month (!). More on that soon.
