catching up (on the surface, at least)
Wednesday, September 18th, 2002 11:31 amBeing at the tail end of this season of introspection, I have a whole lot knocking around in my head that I'd like to write about. But for right now I'm going to stick to the small-scale stuff, in an effort to keep it manageable.
I made an appointment to give blood yesterday after work. Unfortunately, they deferred me because my hematocrit was low! 37% where they require 38%. "Are you a regular donor?" the nurse asked, and yes, I've given reliably every 2 months for the past year or so, since I got on the MIT blood drive list. "Sometimes you just need to give your body a break. You can only make red blood cells so fast." Sage advice, boy. True of my life on many levels beyond the literal cellular, these days, I suspect. (The other lesson is probably not to try giving blood the day after fasting for Yom Kippur... but hey, I didn't feel the need to mention that.)
She recommended eating raisins -- they not only have iron, they help your body absorb and use the iron you take in. Raisins build the blood? Cool, I never heard that before. Instead, though, I went out for dinner with joelll to the S&S so I could eat my fill of chopped liver :-)
Skipping back past Yom Kippur for the moment -- this past weekend
jessruth came up to visit from NYC. Which is always wonderful fun, but this particular weekend packed in more running-around (with other people, that is) than we usually attempt. The reason for scheduling this particular visit was going to see Kate Mulgrew play Katharine Hepburn in Tea At Five at the ART. But by happy chance, it turned out that
roozle and
sunspiral's party (thanks again, guys) was also this weekend, so I got to bring her to that as well. Which turned out to be the highlight of the weekend, really; for me as usual, but also for Jessica -- but that, as Kipling would say, is another story. ;-)
