And in parts of Boston, too? according to CNN.

Am on the phone with [livejournal.com profile] jessruth. Yes, her power's out, but she's home and otherwise safe (albeit with no flashlight handy), and though all cell circuits are currently busy (duh), her land line's working fine.

NYC, Detroit, most of various parts of the NorthEast (Hartford, much of NJ, a lot of eastern Canada, etc). One of those "cascade events" where one power plant dies, and the added thrust kills another, which when it dies, the spike to another kills it, etc.
NOT a terrorist thing,just a hot day.

I've got two lousy flashlights, and lots of candles and matches. But I don't expect to take them to a job interview at 4pm on a Thursday. :-)

(from NYC, whose power went on about an hour ago)

my mom's in nyc at the moment--she was walking to the building (upper east side) when the power blew...

she's in the lobby now, her friend can't walk up 16 stories.

my aunt is MIA in queens, but she'll get home eventually.

glad to see jessruth's okay :-)

Singing, in best Morrissey imitation: "Panic on the streets of Boston... panic on the streets of Framingham..."

Or should I be singing, in best Vicki Lawrence imitation: "That's the night that the lights went out in Beantown..."

Except they didn't. Nothing was hit east of Connecticut as far as I heard or experienced. Ottawa to NYC to Detroit and Cincinnatti. Central NJ and MA were unaffected.

So parts of Boston were not affected then (that's what I was smart-assedly responding too in [livejournal.com profile] chaneleh's original post)?

Not to my knowledge. Some early reports included Boston in a list of cities affected, but as far as I know it was not.

Yep, power was out in NYC all right. Walked 2 and a half miles back instead of taking a couple of subways... it's back now (obviously), at least where I am...
