I just* finished my second ketubah ever. (Actually, third fourth ever *smiles at msmidge and Mr. Archaeologist*, but the second by hand. This is the one for which I can thank sanpaku for the referral. :-)

*Well, not "just". I finished at 11:15. Having basically missed a friend's party (or at least not feeling up to driving to Brighton for it at that point), I took a walk and tried to shake out my wrist, which is complaining loudly.

But I am reasonably happy with the finished product. (If I keep doing one a year, I'll be really good in another decade or so.) The chatan is coming to pick it up first thing tomorrow morning -- before I head out on this grand excursion to Rockport (for which I beg the forgiveness of all the people I can't help out with moving).

How many major projects does this leave me? Six? At least three of which are likewise due early next week, so.

Also, it's weird to be home on a Saturday night.

How does one go about getting the text for a ketubah? My calligrapher/scribe and I are scheduled to start talking about the project soon, but I'm sort of unclear as to how to proceed. And are you still up for doing the Hebrew? Gah! Weddings are such trouble! We should elope!

The answer seems to be that you go to all the ketubah websites (for these folks it was artketubah.com) and look at all the texts there... then, if you aren't sticking strictly to one of the existing [traditional or otherwise] texts, take them to your rabbi and have him help you cobble together what you actually want to say.

Sure, I'm still up for doing the Hebrew for you!

I don't envy you the strain! My mom has done ketubahs on occasion, but doesn't like to b/c she gets nervous about the fact that if she makes a mistake the marriage could be invalid...

So far, I have worked around this problem by only getting asked to do interfaith ketubahs, which, um, obviates the halachic pressure. :-}

Mazal Tov! That's quite an accomplishment...I have yet to finish my "Jewish Sampler" in calligraphy which I started two years ago (yay, Pennsic class that I left in the middle 'cause the instructors began getting into the technicalities of scribe-ing for the East Kingdom, and I live in Atlantia). It's eventually going to be a sampler of the 12 tribes illuminated around the text of the Birchat Ha'Bayit. I don't really like the Birchat Ha'Bayit, but I couldn't think of any other text to place there. Mazal Tov, again, and may all your Ketubot be wonderful. :-)
