While I was home on our day off yesterday afternoon, I got a phonecall from a company called Linguistic Systems, right in Central Square, looking for proofreading help from someone with good English chops but also able to read German. (They had found my freelancing resume online and contacted me.)

They have an ongoing translation project of 35,000+ pages, in the service of a litigation case, translating from German to English for the use of the lawyers. The proofreader(s) are proofing the English translation, but also need to be able to read it against the German text, mostly for completeness (to make sure nothing got skipped) rather than accuracy. I didn't ask how technical the language was or even the topic of the text.

They have 8,000 pages that need to be proofed just between now and Thanksgiving (!), and are looking for about 50 person-hours a week total. (I believe the work can be done at home, but I didn't ask if it really needs to be Boston-local.) They're offering $25/hr.

I don't know that I really have the skills for this (my German is sadly rusty) -- and in any case I told them there was no way I could *possibly* do more than a few hours/week on a freelance basis... but that I might have contacts who could help out, or know others who would, and so on. So I'm meeting with them tomorrow morning early to discuss the project, and I promised to ask around in the meantime.

If you know anyone who might be qualified and interested, please pass this along and have them contact Phyllis Mitzman at Linguistic Systems: 617/864-3900, x416.

Vielen Dank!

*sigh* I would love to, but 1) I have no time and 2) legal documents are a pain in ass to read no matter which language. And my German is probably as sad and rusty as yours.

If only it were in French...not that I don't have other things I should be doing, but a foot in the door somewhere in Boston would be most excellent too. Oh well.

If I had time between now and Thanksgiving, I'd definitely jump on it...
